Long Island Wildlife: Groundhogs & Woodchucks

Woodchuck and groundhog are the different names for the same rodent Marmota monax. These rodents are most like squirrels because they can climb trees and swim. Groundhogs are also great at digging tunnels.

Last summer, one neighborhood in Syosset was invaded by groundhogs. Groundhogs were seen popping out of big holes and destroying the homeowner’s garden. Capable of digging tunnels up to 100 feet in length and up to 6 feet in depth, these animals and their children eat vegetables, grasses, and beans.  Tomatoes are one of their favorite veggies. Here’s the complete story on Long Island Groundhog Invasion via CBS news.  Don’t attempt to catch groundhogs on your own – they may carry rabies. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Cornell University estimates that groundhogs/woodchucks can chuck about 700 pounds. This estimate was created by a wildlife biologist who looked at the inside volume of a woodchuck burrow. If a woodchuck/groundhog can move over 700 pounds of dirt to create their tunnel, they can move 700 pounds of wood. Imagine what these critters will do in your yard!?!

Grounhogs or woodchucks breed soon after emerging in the spring and females bear one litter between late April and early June. Every winter, groundhogs go into deep hibernation. It is believed that they come out of that deep sleep when daylight increases  around February 2nd each year. Happy Groundhog Day!
